'''Pear''' is a fruit, the pome produced by a pear tree, much like an apple. The fruit of cultivated varieties is edible and flavorful.

These juicy fruits are divided into summer, autumn, and winter varieties according to when they ripen or are harvested. Summer pears have the shortest shelf life, while winter pears keep the longest. Pears can be stored, but they do not keep as long as apples.

There are now more than 5000 pear cultivars grown around the world.

Dessert pears have juicy flesh with a slightly tart or sometimes entirely sweet flavor and a pronounced but pleasant aroma. Firmer, less flavorful, and less juicy fruit is used for preserving.

Pears ripen and are harvested over a short period, and once ripe, they spoil very quickly.

The best-known English variety for eating fresh is “Williams,” which ripens in late summer; the slightly later varieties include “Comice” and “Conference.” “Packham's Triumph” is an excellent pear for compotes. Pears can also be dried, served as a dessert with whipped cream or other fruit, added fresh to fruit salads, or served whole with cheese. Cooked-down pears are made into preserves and confectionery.

Pears are very low in vitamin C. They do, however, contain appreciable amounts of B vitamins, particularly just beneath the skin.

100 g of pears provides approximately 213 kJ and 51 kcal.

Pears were once used to make ''pracharanda'', a traditional ingredient in sweet dishes. Today, pears are used to make traditional Czech pear brandy, especially in Moravia.

== Varieties ==
Examples of varieties resistant to scab and apple powdery mildew, reflecting a trend in the early 21st century:
* '''Bohemica''' – late-winter variety with a long storage life;
* '''Decora''' – winter variety with juicy fruit and reddish cheeks;
* '''Dicolor''' – winter variety with attractively colored fruit and a pleasant aromatic flavor;
* '''Erika''' – early-winter variety with a mildly tart-sweet flavor.

== Nashi ==
The fruit of the Asian pear has come to be known as ''nashi'', although “nashi-li” is the correct term because “li” means pear tree in Chinese.
