Allspice berries
Allspice

Allspice is the dried fruit of the allspice tree (Pimenta dioica, Pimenta officinalis). Botanically, the fruits are berries containing two seeds. Allspice originates in Jamaica. Its flavor is sharp and pungent, with notes reminiscent of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper. In some regions it is therefore called Jamaica pepper, clove pepper, or pimento.

History

The first accounts of allspice were brought back by Christopher Columbus, whose physician, Dr. Chanca, discovered the allspice tree. The spice did not become more widespread in Europe until the late 17th century.

Culinary uses

The berries of the allspice tree, known as allspice, have a peppery and mildly sweet flavor. They are used when pickling pork, beef, or fish. They are also suitable for various marinades, sauces, and soups. Their flavor complements mulled wine and homemade liqueurs. Ground allspice is added to sweet baked goods, cookies, and puddings.
