An apple is the fruit of the apple tree and one of the most common fruits in Central Europe and beyond. Botanically it is a pome, like a pear.

Uses

Apples are highly versatile. They are eaten fresh and are also processed into many different products.

Dried apples

Drying is one of the oldest preservation methods and has regained popularity. Gentle drying below 48 °C retains more vitamins, minerals and proteins than harsher preservation methods. As fruit sugars become concentrated, the growth of undesirable microorganisms is inhibited and the fruit retains its characteristic taste, aroma and appearance. Dried apples can be eaten directly or after soaking in lukewarm water or milk, and are used in baking and cooking. They can support bowel function and a healthy intestinal microbiome.

Some specialist producers dry apples for as long as 2 months to achieve a particular quality.

Apple juice

Apple juice contains vitamins, natural sugars, pectin, fruit acids and other natural compounds. It is usually made by pressing crushed apples. For longer storage it must be pasteurized, concentrated or chilled. Unfiltered 100% apple juice with no added sugar or flavoring is commonly sold as apple cider or cloudy apple juice, depending on the region.

Apple spirit

Fermenting the sugars in crushed apples or apple juice and then distilling the liquid produces apple brandy; calvados is a well-known example.

Health and nutrition

Apples contain vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants. These nutrients contribute to a balanced diet, support normal digestion and can help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood-sugar levels. Apples are not a treatment for disease, but regular fruit consumption is associated with general cardiovascular and metabolic health.
