Coconut macaroons are cookies made from shredded coconut, egg whites and sugar. They should not be confused with macarons, the French almond meringue cookies. Although the two cookies share a common historical origin, they are entirely different products.

Coconut macaroon vs. macaron

Confusing these two confections is one of the most common culinary mix-ups:

  • Coconut macaroon = a simple, rustic mound of coconut
  • Macaron = an elegant, filled almond meringue cookie that is difficult to make

Basic recipe

Variations

Classic

  • Chocolate – dipped halfway into melted chocolate
  • With almonds – an Italian variation made with almond flour (amaretti)
  • With condensed milk – used instead of egg whites for an extra-soft texture

Modern

  • With caramel filling – two macaroons joined with dulce de leche
  • Matcha – with green tea in the mixture
  • Passion fruit – a tropical variation
  • Gluten-free – coconut macaroons are naturally gluten-free

Macaroons around the world

  • USA – chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons are traditional for Passover because they contain no flour
  • Italyamaretti, made from almond flour and bitter almonds
  • Austria and GermanyKokosmakronen are baked as Christmas cookies
  • Czechia – coconut mounds are a traditional type of Christmas cookie

Coconut mounds in Czech tradition

In Czechia, coconut macaroons are typically baked as Christmas cookies. They are often simply called “coconut mounds” or “coconut meringues.” A popular variation is baked on a small wafer: the coconut mixture is placed on the wafer and baked.

Other Czech coconut confections include:

  • Coconut balls – made from a coconut mixture with rum
  • Raffaello-style sweets – a homemade version with an almond inside
  • Coconut cake – with coconut cream and shavings
